Shurbet here! Hope your racing season is going well. Ours is flying by! I stopped by the backstretch barns the other day to talk to my cousin, Seymour. He's a warm up pony from Brooklyn. But I won't name drop who he's worked with.

Seymour said he's been having a grand time watching all the visitors. There's been a lot of travelers from all over the world: England, Japan, Florida, Nebraska. The weather has been what it usually is in Saratoga Springs. Some rain. Some sun. Some rain. More sun. Seymour is looking forward to Travers and hoping that he catches a glimpse of that moose who was hanging around the track back in June.

Meanwhile, back at the store, the official 2009 New York Racing Association (NYRA) Travers T-shirt has arrived as well as the hat and glass. This is my pick of the week because I like to collect them every year so I can say, "What? Oh, my Travers tee? Yea, I was there." The Saratoga Race Course (SRC) tee and hat are also in. You'll also find the 2009 Greg Montgomery poster t-shirt. Greg is a cool guy that you can meet this Wednesday night (August 12th) at 7pm in front of Impressions. I'm going to have to get his autograph for Seymour cause he's a HUGE fan. It'll be a great holiday gift!

Hey! Shurbet here. That's Sure-Bet, not sherbert. Ha ha. Family joke, 'what do you name a horse that always wins?'. You call him 'Shurbet'.

I'm just getting a feel for this whole blogging thing. I'm a personal friend of Marianne and Dave Barker's and they were looking for someone to blog about all their store's cool gear - so here I am! Each week I'll be bringing you my thoughts on all the new stuff Impressions has got. I'm so excited about it that I'm almost speechless. Ok, not speechless. If you learn anything about me, you'll know I'm never speechless. Maybe I should have been called 'NeverStops'. Ha.

I'm gonna talk about my first item so ready, set, go!

Here are the lovely horse planters that Georgetown just came out with. Marianne tells me her customers loved the cats and dogs that Impressions has carried since last summer. But since this is Saratoga Springs, she asked Georgetown specifically to design a horse of course! The planters come in two sizes, large ($44.99) and small($24.99). They're a nice brown color with a brush of black. I'll admit that I was thinking of doing my mane the same way with nice colored tips; this comb-over thing is just not working for me. Beautiful glass eyes gaze at you from a face that everyone will fall in love with. And I tell you, the slightest touch makes them start nodding their heads so if you want someone to endlessly agree with you, just set one of these guys to bobbing. Who could resist?

Jazz Fest Weekend 2009

Hi Everyone!!

With Ashley on her Honeymoon (Congrats to you and Joe) we almost forgot to let you know what was going on here this weekend.

Saturday June 27th and Sunday June 28th we will be at SPAC for the Jazz Festival selling all the official Jazz Fest merchandise. Be sure to visit our "vintage" tent where we'll be selling lots of past years stuff! For information and a list of performances visit www.spac.org. Here in front of the store we will have Jerry Bradley from Saratoga Notecards with his wonderful artwork (both Saturday and Sunday). We will have the official Jazz Fest and SPAC merchandise at the store as well.

We'd also like to Congratulate some of our employees on graduating! Friday Evening Observations

Sophia, an Italian greyhound, stopped in this evening to grab a doggie treat. I should say, dragged her owner, because that's what this little 20lb dog was doing. She's very determined to get her liver treat. Ha ha. Sophia's so sweet that we always enjoy saying hello whenever she drops in.

A little while later, Ashley noticed a couple of visitors on the sidewalk taking photos of the Phila St. sign. She offered to take their photo; the Adelphi made a great background!

Maddy arranged and re-arranged because we're getting ready for the great clothing-movement of the century. If you're familiar with our usual layout, boy are you in for a surprise. We're hoping for a little more feng shui. You'll have to let us know what you think!

Shop Night

Hey there. Thanks to anyone who was able to stop in this past Wednesday night for a little shopping with Downtown Susie Brown. It was a beautiful night - the kind that reminds you why you live here when it's February and you're questioning your sanity. We apologize for not getting the dog day photos right up here so you can check them out. We've just been swamped by UPS shipments of new merchandise as things start to pickup for summer. You'll be able to see the new items online in our catalog just as soon as we can snap some photos, upload, and post.

To recap, you will now find new colors, sizes, and designs of the:

a brand new long-sleeve Ladies Henna tee

Whew! That's a lot. Obviously, things are picking up and I can tell you it's no different in the town of Saratoga itself. People are enjoying their leisurely strolls on Broadway, Phila, Caroline, and through Congress Park. Next weekend (23rd & 24th) is Dressage At Saratoga (D.A.S.) so it'll be busy!

Hot! Hot! Hot!

It's getting hot, hot, hot! Although we hear the temperature is going to drop 30 degrees so Wednesday should only be 60. Isn't that funny? A month ago we were estactic about 40 degrees and now we're whining about 60! Ah, upstate New York how we do love thee...
Speaking of hot, the 2009 clothing line has started to arrive. Check out the blue and birch zip-up sweatshirt, the tye-dyes, and the bamboo t-shirts. Yes, bamboo as in what a panda eats. Very in, very comfortable. More on this subject later.
Let's see what else has arrived...dog bone plaques with many sayings such as, "What part of 'Woof' don't you get?" and "Who's your doggie?", Georgetown metal planters (if you loved them last summer, you're going to go crazy over the new ones), Ipswich Bay Soap (great for gifts, customizable for weddings, baby showers, etc), and much more. The Dog Days of ...Spring?

Yes, it is the Dog Days of spring for us. And when we say spring, we mean Saturday, May 2nd. We've been planning, calling, typing, drawing, cutting, coloring, gluing, and whatever other -ings you can think of!

Mutley's dog house is brightening up our store once again. Check out all his garden pals by Georgetown. These metal cat and dog planters were such a HUGE hit last summer that we thought they'd make great presents for Mother's Day. (FYI: Mother's Day is May 10th) Tons of new designs should be arriving any day as well.

Gifts, Favors, Welcome Baskets

Thanks to anyone who stopped by our table at Image this afternoon. Lots of interest in the new soaps (customize the label and photo), the drunken bear, and the gift baskets. The most popular trend in wedding and convention planning is to present guests with a gift basket or bag when they arrive in town. We can deliver the gift bags to your guests' local accommodations where they receive them upon check-in.

We are more than happy to help you design a welcome basket or gift bag that fits your theme and, most importantly, your budget. Items usually chosen include maps of the area, brochures on things to do or see in Saratoga Springs, souvenirs (magnets, key chains, coffee cups), snacks (fudge sauce, pretzels for dipping, spring water taffy, horse head lollipops), and a gift from the couple or the company.

We can assemble the baskets for you if you would like. We usually ask for a couple of days' notice and 2 weeks for larger orders. Gus a.k.a. Mary Poppins

It's a windy Monday. How windy, you ask? Well, our mannequin 'Gus' tried to use his umbrella to fly to Phila St. He didn't quite make it. But with a little super glue, duct tape, foam, and some black paint, he should be able to pull himself together. We're thinking of setting him up with Mary Poppins for a couple lessons. Just kidding. Gus is ok, but he's going to hang with us in the store today.

Marianne, Kim, and Maddy are back from Boston. They went to a trade show this past weekend and found all sorts of new goodies. I'll let you know as soon as I get the low-down, but you'll have to keep it on the down-low. Ha ha ha.

Seriously, who wants to be serious on a Monday? If you need a smile or maybe just a cup of free hot coffee, stop by and visit with us. We won't tell your boss.

We've been hopping busy putting out new spring merchandise. If you get a chance, check out our front window. Anne did an awesome job creating a spring garden complete with 3 foot tall carrots, whispering bunnies, and decorated easter eggs. A customer informed us that stepping into our store was like entering a floral shop because it's all decked out with colorful spring-time blossoms. We must admit, it certainly feels wonderful after the cabin fever we experienced.

Marianne designed a new sticker that reads 'My dog digs Saratoga' on a bone shaped sticker. It's really cool. Or as our younger employees might say, 'oh snap'.

Kim & Maddy have been working on dog day plans for May 2nd. The kids coloring contest is available at the front counter. We'll have our count the biscuit contest, the shelter will be here, and much more.

Sunday was a stunning day that made you appreciate living in Saratoga. This Monday makes you appreciate fireplaces, gloves, jackets with hoods, homemade soup, and a hot beverage. We can help you out with 3 out of 5 of those things. (Sorry, fireplaces and homemade soup are just not our thing even though we love them too!) Marching In The Sunshine

Good Afternoon! What a gorgeous, wonderful, beautiful, exceptional sunny Sunday! It's perfect weather for strolling along Broadway. People are out doing just that with coffee in hand and dog at heel. Our golden retriever friend, Cory, stopped in today. He informed us that the lunchtime smells were making his mouth water so we gave him a biscuit to tide him over. Marianne is working on our Puzzle Piece Project which is going to be super cool for the winner. Ashley fixed our blog so you can see it again. Sorry for the disappearing act! Did we mention that we still have coffee and now....VANILLA WAFERS! You do know what that means right? We only put wafers out when spring is nearly here. So between the time change and the change of cookie, you KNOW spring is on its way.

March Snows

It's the beginning of March with spring so close you can almost grab it, but we're getting snow flurries. It's been coming down fairly steady and the weatherman says we can expect 2-4". But what's 2-4" for an Upstate New Yorker right? If you're out and about, stop in for some fresh hot coffee (free - as always) and browse through our sale items. Still cleaning house to get ready for the 2009 race season!

Daisy Days

You may have heard that we got a bit of snow. Ok, quite a bit. Nevertheless, spring is going to arrive within weeks. So we have optimistically displayed our daisies. Bright colors are popping in ladies' sweats and children's tees while baby chicks are dancing in the windows with the new Byers Choice. It may be snowy outside, but in our store we're enjoying our daisy days.

February is Fantastic

Yes, February is fantastic. The holidays are mostly over, the weather tempts us with glimpses of spring, there's still enough snow for snowboarding and skiing, and you feel like you can finally breathe again.
With a weekend of beautiful weather, we've seen more of our four-legged friends. Hello Biscuit! Hello Ollie! Hello Mister! We still have fresh water in our doggie bowl - on the chillier days you'll find it just inside the door. And of course, help your pal to a doggie treat when you help yourself to a complimentary cup of hot coffee and ginger snaps.
This past weekend was The Dance Flurry. It was a big success this year with over 4,000 people. We've heard that some of you were dancing fools until 2am! Of course, it was also Valentine's Day. If you didn't stop in for a taste of hot fudge, we still have samples available today. Yum!
Finally, to celebrate President's week, we have a 25% Off special on Obama T-shirts!
See, February is fantastic. So don't let cabin fever get you down. Enjoy the outdoors, stroll broadway with a drink from Uncommons and a snack from Mrs. London's, and remember that Saratoga is a great place to live all year 'round.

We served up more than a bowl of chowder this past Saturday during the annual Chowderfest. Thanks to you, our customers, we were able to donate $150.94 towards the expansion of the new Saratoga County Animal Shelter and a whopping 60lbs of dog/cat food and towels. We will continue the collection basket for wet or dry cat food and old towels to donate to the shelter. Anyone who drops off these items to our store before February 14th will receive a $5 gift certificate to Impressions of Saratoga in appreciation for the support.
Having served up over 115 bowls of chowder, we were very happy with this year’s recipe. Apparently, so was Mayor Scott Johnson’s dog, Dr. Watson. With much to-do, Dr. Watson strolled down the carpet, immediately targeted BARKer’s CHOWder, and wolfed down the entire bowl of Impressions’ chowder. It appears that Dr. Watson approved of this year’s recipe just as much as last years.
